Ted Barela wants us to place our trust in him and send him to Santa Fe to represent us. But the last time voters trusted Ted Barela to represent them, things didn’t turn out so well.
Ted Barela accused in whistleblower lawsuit of ignoring and refusing employee concerns
As Mayor of Estancia, Barela was an irresponsible leader and manager.
A former employee of the Town of Estancia has filed a whistleblower lawsuit against Barela and the Town of Estancia, alleging that she was fired after she witnessed misuse of taxpayer funds and town employees having sex in the children’s section of the public library. The employee alleged that Barela refused to even hear the details of the employee’s concerns.
The Barela Record: Financial mismanagement and fraud concerns
According to an independent audit, while Barela was Mayor of Estancia, city finances were a mess and employees were misusing taxpayer dollars, raising concerns of fraud. Things were so bad that the state withheld needed funding for roads because of the Town’s sloppy bookkeeping.
Fed-up city leaders quit in response to Barela’s mismanagement
Things got so bad with Ted Barela serving as Estancia’s mayor that key employees and community leaders resigned or quit, including Estancia’s Fire Captain with eighteen years of experience on the job, as well as the entire Library Board of Trustees resigning in protest of Barela’s hiring decision.
Ted Barela: Too Irresponsible to Serve Senate District 39
New Mexico Together on Wednesday cited as further evidence that Ted Barela is too irresponsible to represent District 39 a blistering audit showing financial mismanagement and lack of leadership in the Town of Estancia while Barela, now a candidate for New Mexico Senate, served as the town’s mayor.
“Ted Barela is too irresponsible to serve as a state senator,” said Heather Brewer, New Mexico Together director. “This audit clearly lays out a pattern of fiscal irresponsibility and mismanagement. Given the state’s grave financial crisis, which was created by the failed leadership of Gov. Susana Martinez, another failed leader, like Ted Barela, is the wrong choice in this election.”
The audit, released Wednesday by the Office of the State Auditor, enumerates examples of financial mismanagement and lack of leadership in the town of Estancia from July 2012 to July 2015. Barela served as mayor from 2008 until he resigned in 2013.
The audit, however, is not the only evidence of Barela’s irresponsibility during his time as mayor. Indeed, the town’s finances were in disarray, a whistleblower filed a suit against Barela for his mismanagement, and the Fire Captain and every member of the Library Board of Trustees quit in protest of the mess Barela had made.
“New Mexico has had enough of failed leadership under Gov. Susana Martinez,” Brewer said. “Like Martinez, Barela is a failed leader who will do nothing to move our state forward. In fact, given his record as mayor of Estancia, Barela could very likely make our state’s financial situation even worse.”
Ted Barela’s record of irresponsibility and mismanagement as Mayor of Estancia is shown in Estancia District Court Case D-722-CV-201400138; Town of Estancia Audit, Year Ended 6/30/2012; and, Albuquerque Journal, 7/7/11, 9/1/11, and 7/18/13.
